Scotland’s first lending library, open to all, now a museum and reference library.

Terms of access

No appointment needed during opening hours, other visits by appointment. Entrance fee £7.50, under 16s free

Opening hours

1st March to 31st October Wednesday – Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sundays 2pm – 5pm, closed 1st November to end February except by special arrangement.

Disabled access

100m walk from car park, on grass and gravel, gentle slope. Lower floor: all level access. Upper floor (main library) has 16 step stone staircase with handrail. Books can be brought to lower floor on request.

No longer lending, but will lend to other museums for display on request.

Early books by Scottish printers. Collection of David Drummond, 3rd Lord Madderty, given 1680. Collection of Robert Hay Drummond, Archbishop of York, on his death in 1791. Collection of Janet St Germain given 2013 of Scottish First Editions, Scottish Enlightenment philosophy.
